Dry Needling in Oconomowoc: Can It Really Help Piriformis Syndrome?
Let’s just be real for a second: as both a pelvic floor therapist and general physical therapist in Oconomowoc, I treat a lot of butts. Yup, you read that right. Butts. And one of the biggest troublemakers hiding back there is the piriformis. When the piriformis is angry, it can wreak all kinds of havoc, whether it’s contributing to pelvic floor problems or sending pain down the back of your leg.
So what’s my go-to treatment when the piriformis decides to throw a tantrum? Dry needling. Every. Single. Time. Honestly, I’ve seen dry needling work wonders to help piriformis syndrome, and I recommend it all the time for my clients in Oconomowoc.
What is Piriformis Syndrome?
The piriformis is a pretty cool and very important muscle. It rotates and stabilizes the hip and is also one of the muscles that forms the deepest layer of the pelvic floor (which is why I deal with this muscle ALL THE TIME). Because of all the piriformis does, it’s pretty common for it to get overworked and extra salty when there are strength imbalances or dysfunction elsewhere in the core, hip, or pelvic floor.
When the piriformis is angry, you may feel a deep ache in your butt (super not fun), pain down the back of your thigh, or even zaps, burning, tingling, or numbness all the way down your leg thanks to its close relationship with your sciatic nerve. That whole mess is what is known as piriformis syndrome.
What Can I Do To Get Rid of Piriformis Syndrome?
Yes, we’ll dive into how dry needling can help with piriformis syndrome, but there are other key parts of recovery you can’t skip:
1. Stretch Your Piriformis
Show your piriformis a little love by giving it a good stretch. Here is a super easy stretch to add into your day. You can even pair some deep breathing with this stretch to take it up a notch.
2. Get Those Nerves Gliding
Getting more blood flow going to your sciatic nerve can really help reduce that burning, shooting, numbness, or tingling you may be experiencing down your leg.
3. Address Muscle Imbalances
When the piriformis is angry, there are almost always other hip muscles that are slacking off. Hip abductors: I’m especially looking at you. Strengthening these guys evens out the workload and makes everybody happier. Below is my favorite way to strengthen these muscles that takes your run-of-the-mill leg raises up a notch.
How Dry Needling Can Help Piriformis Syndrome
Here’s the deal: massage, foam rolling, stretching, nerve glides, and strengthening are all great tools to help calm the piriformis, and they play an essential role in lasting relief. But most of the time, hands-on treatment is very necessary to completely resolve symptoms.
And seriously, I’ve seen nothing work as quickly or as effectively as dry needling to help with piriformis syndrome. Because the piriformis is a deeper muscle underneath our big glute max muscle and all our fatty tissue, there is just no other manual treatment that can get right down to the piriformis and release all that tension.

Bottom Line on Dry Needling to Help Piriformis Syndrome (Pun Totally Intended)
Dry needling to help with piriformis syndrome could be the missing piece to finally getting relief! When the piriformis is irritated, it can sometimes feel like no amount of stretching, foam rolling, or heating pads will make it happy—and that’s because sometimes those surface-level fixes just can’t reach the deeper problem.
That’s where dry needling comes in! Using dry needling to help piriformis syndrome allows the muscle to relax, improves blood flow, and takes pressure off the irritated sciatic nerve that’s been driving you crazy.
So if you’re tired of the constant butt pain, the tingling down your leg, or just feeling like you’ve got a cranky muscle running the show, it’s time to do something about it. If you’re in Oconomowoc, give us a call or shoot us a message!
Time to tame that cranky piriformis and get you moving (and sitting!) pain-free again. Trust me—your butt will thank you!
